Doing the Right Thing — Even When It’s Not the Easy Thing

At Solutions, we talk a lot about values. Not the fluffy, corporate kind you find on a poster, but the ones that actually shape how we work and how we behave when no one’s looking. This week, we were reminded of one of our most important values: doing the right thing — even when it’s not the easiest option.

We had a sad moment in the Solutions family: one of our old workhorse vans finally gave up. After eight years of faultless service and nearly 160,000 miles, the cam belt went and the engine followed. It didn’t owe us a penny; it had done its duty with absolute reliability. But the damage was beyond repair, so we arranged for a scrapyard to come and take it on its final journey.

The recovery truck arrived at 6pm, just as Alistair — our main man — was heading home. He showed the driver where the van was, completed the paperwork, and the scrapper said, “Great, I’ll take it from here.”

Most people would have got in their car, driven away, and gone home. But not Alistair.

Our office sits in the beautiful but remote Albury Park. It was dark, quiet, and isolated. And Alistair made a simple decision — one that no one asked him to make, and one he didn’t have to make. He chose to stay. Just in case.

And he was absolutely right to.

As the driver winched the van onto the truck, his hand became trapped. He shouted to Alistair to hit the release switch — and Alistair reacted instantly, freeing him and preventing what could have been a very serious injury.

We couldn’t be more proud of him.

That small decision — to stay until the job was actually done, even though he had no obligation to — made all the difference. It prevented harm. It kept someone safe. And it reflected perfectly how we think and how we operate at Solutions.

  • Firstly, safety always comes first — even if it’s not technically “our” job.
  • Secondly, doing the right thing matters. Always.
  • And thirdly, we stay until the job is properly finished — whatever it is.

Alistair didn’t stay because he had to.
He stayed because it was the right thing to do.

And that, in a nutshell, is what being part of Solutions means.
